Note: I hate the structure of this post, and need to edit it. Hopefully I manage to make myself do that sometime (soonish), because really, you deserve better writing than this. Notably too, there should be much more that I write about this, but the idea of it has been sitting in my to-do list for days now, and I believe it is better to publish this than to let it become stale… Note II: This thought is in large part based on a conversation with a close friend some time ago, who gave me similar advice when I was struggling with balancing my own life’s workload.
We are never just on a journey. At any given time in our life, there are so many things going on, so many directions and so many situations vying for our energy and attention. Work, health, relationships, friends, education…. Countless tasks that require us to stay focussed, that require dedication. Balance is key, and steady progress in all ways is much better in the long term than rotating through what will get our attention for the next timespan. What good is exceptional physical health if it can only be maintained at the cost of, for example, work? What good is being promoted faster if we have no time for friends and partners? This balance is often precarious. When things are where they should be, we have to remember this is the result of concerted effort, not luck. If the effort changes, there will naturally be an impact on results. If we stop working out, we have to adjust our diet, and have to find other outlets for our energy. If we work harder at the office, then we must find a way to balance this, too. Accountability too must be internal primarily, but is importantly aided by those around us, who can often provide perspectives on our actions we might not ourselves recognize
